The admissibility requirement that expert evidence be shown to be reliable applies to the manner in which principles are applied as well as to the question of whether the principles that were sought to be applied are reliable; i.e., reliable principles must be applied in a reliable way and the application of reliable principles must be based on reliable or sufficient data.

Westmoreland, 312 F.3d 302, 627-628 (7th Cir. 2002) (upholding trial court's admission of co-defendant Abeln's statements qualified as statements against interest because the (a) "statements [such as, (1)....Federal Rule of Evidence of Evidence 804(b)(3) or a comparable State rule creates a hearsay exception for a statement which was at the time of its making so far contrary to the declarant's pecuniary or proprietary interest, or so far tended to subject the declarant to civil or criminal liability, or to render invalid a claim by the declarant against another, that a reasonable person in the declarant's position would not have made the statement unless believing it to be true. A statement tending to expose the declarant to criminal liability and offered to exculpate the accused is not admissible unless corroborating circumstances clearly indicate the trustworthiness of the statement.

Lehman, 347 F.3d 1170, 1173-1174 (9th Cir. 2003) (holding, in plaintiff inmate's civil rights action against defendant prison officials, that the psychiatrist's opinion was inadmissible hearsay because the....A statement can be hearsay only if the statement is "offered to prove the truth of the matter asserted." The purpose for which a statement is offered depends on the purpose of the offeror of the statement. Hence, a statement is offered to prove the truth of the matter asserted if the offeror (normally trial counsel) seeks to use the statement to show that the matter or proposition asserted by the declarant (the maker of the statement) is in fact true.
