If a defamatory statement impugns a person's character and if truth is a defense, character may be admissible to show that the otherwise defamatory statements is true.

Blackburn v. United Parcel Services, Inc., 179 F.3d 81, 99 (3d Cir. 1999) (holding, in plaintiff UPS employee's diversity action against defendant employer, that the trial court properly excluded his testimony because "[plaintiff]....There is a hearsay exception for reputation among members of a person's family by blood, adoption, or marriage, or among a person's associates, or in the community, concerning a person's birth, adoption, marriage, divorce, death, legitimacy, relationship by blood, adoption, or marriage, ancestry, or other similar fact of personal or family history.

Fed. R. Evid. 402 ("All relevant evidence is admissible, except as otherwise provided by the Constitution of the United States, by Act of Congress, by these rules, or by other rules prescribed by the Supreme Court pursuant to statutory authority.").Relevant evidence is admissible unless another rule of evidence, law, or valid principle mandates or permits exclusion.

United States v. Gibson, 409 F.3d 325, 338 (6th Cir. 2005) (upholding trial court's admission of government witness's testimony because "it bore 'particularized guarantees of trustworthiness,' since (1) "Gibson's....The right of confrontation guaranteed by the Confrontation Clause of the Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution puts no constraints on the admissibility of nontestimonial hearsay statements; the federal constitutional right of confrontation does not apply to such statements.
