A criminal defendant's criminal propensity to commit cannot be used to show that defendant committed the crime or crimes for which he or she is on trial.

The exception applies in a civil action or proceeding only if the party against whom the testimony is now offered or a predecessor in interest had an opportunity and similar motive in the prior proceeding to develop the testimony by direct, cross, or redirect examination.

Edelmann, 458 F.3d 791, 809-810 (8th Cir. 2006) (upholding trial court's admission of accused's prior bad acts because (1) even though the three prior convictions were approximately 15 years old, such were....A person's propensity, or character, is not barred by the character rule if it is offered for any purpose other than to show a person's conduct on a particular occasion.
